[NI0680] They came to Sumter County, Alabama after 1832, James is 19 in 1850 census and born in South Carolina. Also Mary is listed as head of household so by 24 Sept. 1850 when the census was taken William may be sick or already dead.

[NI0683] Lori Meador, age 50, from North Carolina lives next door to Elizabeth's son Shepard Rushing and a younger Jobe Meador, age 45 of North Carolina is living next farm from Elizabeth. North Carolina's young Evan[age 29] Womble and Thomas Rushing age 18, [Thomas Maden age 16, farmer, is in the Parker Blacksmith's shop] are also on the same Census page.
These cousins and in laws are all farmers or working in the leather shoe and tack trades in Paynesville, Sumter County, Alabama in 1850.

The Elijah D. Rushing, age 40, wife Nancy, 39; children Alexander H. age 14 and Frances E. 7 are on the facing page with the same number, they are not placed or included in this database, yet.

[NI0688] C & P Vol I, (PB 5/505) reports that Wm. Richardson received 700 acres in Isle of Wight Co. on 29 Sep 1664 for transporting 14 people, including an Ed. Goodson.

[NI0690] John Paul Rushing is sometimes called John Polk Rushing in some pedigrees. I used John Paul from the census records and not Polk as in the cemetery record.

[NI0691] Frances Lavenia Peaton daughter of William Peaton and Millicent unknown were in Sumter Co., AL, by 1840 and appear to have died after the 1880 Census. William and Millicent Peaton may have had five other children besides Frances, three are known.

[NI0693] John Peaton Rushing, was the twin brother of Temperance Penniah Rushing.

"John Harvey Bird was married twice. His first wife's name is unknown, and it is assumed that she died, possibly in childbirth. She may have been from Lauderdale County, Mississippi. After her death, he then married Temperance "Tempie" Penniah Rushing (see my Rushing link) on March 8, 1899, in Walker (Siloam), Sumter County, Alabama. John Harvey and Tempie are buried in the Siloam Cemetery south of York, Sumter County, Alabama, off County Road 9. The name is spelled "Byrd" on their tombstone.

The 7 children of John Harvey Bird(Byrd) and Tempie Rushing are: (Notice that the children's names are all spelled "Byrd".) (1) Willie Ann Byrd, who was born March 3, 1900 and died Nov. 8, 1988 in Livingston, Sumter County, AL. She married George M. Williams, and they had two children: W.A. and George Harvey. (2) Lavinia Byrd, who was born Aug. 15, 1901 and died May 29, 1978 in York, Sumter County, AL. She married John Baptist Hughes. They had no children and are both buried in the Siloam Cemetery. (3) Helen Lucille Byrd, who was born March 13, 1903 and died June 12, 1984 in York, Sumter County, AL. She married Norman Eugene Walker. They had no children either, and are both also buried at Siloam. (4) Clarence Abram Byrd, who was born Oct. 27, 1904 and died May 13, 1976 in York, AL. (5) Jesse Marion Byrd, who was born July 21, 1906 and died Oct. 14, 1933. He was killed in an automobile accident and is buried at Siloam. (6) Mitchel Daily Byrd, who was born July 5, 1908 and died Feb. 2, 1986 in York, AL. He married Louise Bennett, and they are both buried at Siloam. They had one daughter Jane, who married Tommy Autry and had 2 daughters. (7) Raymond Alan Byrd, who was born Jan. 1, 1911 at Walker (Siloam) in Sumter County, AL." -by Brad Campbell, 2001
