Explanation for rejection of Philip Rushing as father of Nathan, William and
John P.(Peter) Rushing.
- William Rushing (born abt. 1793) is a brother of John P. (Peter) Rushing
(born abt 1784) per family letter of 1929.
- Nathan Rushing (born Sept. 1805) is a half-brother of John P. (Peter) Rushing and
William Rushing (born 1793) per family letter of 1929.
- Death record in 1854 for William Rushing (born 1793) states that his father is William Rushing (not Philip Rushing) and his mother is Mary(not Jemima).
- Nathan Rushing(born Sept. 1805) was a minor in 1816. If Philip was his father,
Nathan would have been included in the following Book 3 page 184 entry, as an
orphan child of Philip in need of a guardian.
Stewart County Bonds and Settlements, Book A (1812-1814)
(TN Archives Roll 52)

Stewart County Bonds and Settlements, Book 3
(Miscellaneous Entries Nov. 1814 – Nov. 1824)
184 Elijah Lowry, Lewis Brewer, Elijah Rushing, guardian bond for Reuben

There is a biographical sketch on John on page. 996 of the History of Southeast Missouri, pub. Goodspeed, 1888. It said that he was a highly respected farmer who lived near Bertand, Mississippi Co., MO. His paternal grandfather was born in North Carolina and settled near Camden, TN, at a very early date. The grandfather reared his family there and died when about 70 years of age. When John's father died his mother remarried. Her second husband was James K. Nance. She, however, died at the age of 25, and her sons then went to live their maternal grandparents. When John was 11 years old, his grandfather died. He and his brother continued to live with their grandmother until adulthood. In his early adult years John was a school teacher. In 1867 he was elected Clerk of Benton County.
In 1870 he helped take the census for that county. In February of 1874 he moved to Mo.

He married first, Marinda Harris, daughter of Rice Harris, circa
1860. Born, 18 Aug 1843, in AR. Died, 13 Apr. 1888, in Charleston, MO. Burial: Apr 1888, in Oak Grove Cem., Charleston, MO.

[NI0749] The family lore about Nancy May being part Indian has never been proven. However it has not been excluded from the CURRY side of the family, Nancy's paternal great grandfather, Joseph May, Sr. who fought in the Revolutionary war from South Carolina's 5th regiment, is said to be from Scotland.
