John T. Rushing is the brother of William. He is also mentioned as one of the
"Rushing boys" in Anderson Avitts pension records. He was a Minister of the
Gospel in Golconda, Pope Co., Illinois. These records reflect a bitter
confrontation with his second, much younger wife who accused him of battering
her. A private settlement was reached, but the details not disclosed. In one
poinent letter he writes (1920): "I am the sole surviver of nine brothers, who
ware in the Union Army. Three died in service, five since, the last one about
20 years ago - whose Widow, with myself, are the only pensioners now living in
all the family." That widow is Matilda Woodall [8951] whose first husband was
William Rushing. She and her husband Woodall assist John T. Rushing with

[NI2913] Rueben Thomas Rushing served in the Civil War as Ordinance Sergeant of Co. "D", 20 Reg't., Kentucky Infantry. Records show he enlisted January 6, 1862 and was discharged January 17, 1865.
During the war, he was stationed at Bowling Green, Ky. and he wrote a letter to his friend D.P. Campbell. The following is the letter, in some places the handwriting has been distorted and it is impossible to read, in these cases a (?) will be placed.

Bowling Green
Mr. D.P. Campbell March 1863

It is through the kind mercies of God who rules the universe that I am permitted to write you a few lines from which you will learn that I am in moderate health hoping that when they reach your hands that they may find you in good health and surrounded with all the comforts of life that is calculated to make one happy. I can inform you that I recieved your kind and welcome letter of the 16th (?) which gave me great pleasure to hear from you and to hear that you was well.

D.P. I have not got anything to write to you of any great interest. You must excuse me for not answering you letter sooner for I had much to attend to that I could not write with any satisfaction. I can inform you that on the evening of the 22nd of Feb. that the sounds of the canons was heard like muttering thunder rolling through the air around Bowling Green and on the evening of the (23rd or 28th?) the soldiers and the citizens assembeled on the square and after inspection (could be instruction) and review the celebration of Washington's Birthday was in the highest degree successful. The entertainment consisted of music and speeches and of many good songs. The attention of all present was called to Washington's farewell address. Speeches was made by Brigadeer General Manson of Indiana, Captain Mayall of Maine and Major Ciel and others who was all able speakers. Cheers was given for the Constitution of the Union. The good ole state of Ky and Gov. Johnson of Tennessee until it appeared that the earth did shake. We enjoyed ourselves on that day (?) have since we left home. We have seen a hard since we left our homes and what is the cause of it. It is the love we have for our country and the constitution that was found and established by Washington and his companions. The love of these things the Union has caused us all to leave our homes, our wives, our children, our lovers and friends the love of these things causes us to truely march into the field of battle although it may sad the hearts riches jewels and priceless blood. Can we ever submit to a confederacy Governed by(?) traitors and sustained by deception, cruelty, and injustice? No before we will submit to these things we will let the sacrifice be filled with our lives. If by laying down our lives can only restore peace to our once happy country (?) world.

It will be comfort to our children when we are gone. They can look back to our acts as we have looked back on the acts of those that laid down thier lives in the defense of the liberty we so long enjoyed. Dear friend I hope you and every one of my frineds in August next will march to the ballot box and there mark the block out for those that you are satisfied are true to the constitution of the United States for we can not be at home to choose for ourselves and if you will do the work at home and elect such men as are true to the constitution we will do the work here. Understand that I am not an abolitionist not a (condonant?) for these principals are not constitutional and I know that God will enable us to conquer and put down the monarchial principals so that peace and hopings will again prevail throughout these United States and we can return home to our relatives and friends and there be permitted to live in peace the remainder of our days and that will be a great deal more more satisfactions to us than it is to hear from our friends and relatives by way of letter. D.P. you stated in your letter that you wanted me to write you you about what we thought of Lincoln Green. I cannot tell you much about Lincoln Green but I consider that what we call United States to Green led good it (payes?) with us Dollar for Dollar there is not difference in it and any of the Ky. money. You stated in your letter that you was too (to?) bashful to kiss the girls and to talk to them for your self but you would do the best for me that you could but the girls did not like to be kissed by R.T. that is alright I don't blame them for it for if I was them I would not kiss him neither for he has not shaved all over his face since he left home. D.P. you wanted to know if I would sell my land or not and what I would take for it in green back. I can only say to you I do not want to sell it at this time, but if I get in the (notion?) to sell I will write to you. Tell (some names can't be made out) that their respects was joyfully read I was glad to hear from them. Give them my love and respects tell them to write to me and I will return the compliments. Give my love and respects to all inquiring friends. Tell T.A. I wrote to him when I wrote to you and I have not read any answer from him yet tell him I would like to hear from him. Give him my love and respects. D.P. the rebels have been doing some mischief not far from here the other day they caputred a train of (cars or cows) about 15 mi. from here and burnt a part of them up. They was loaded with mules and they could not take all of them off and they burnt them in the cars they also burnt a Depot which contained a large amount of (?) mostly belonging to citizens there was only about 15 of them. Our boys started right out after them. They got five of them and there is a scout out of our regiment after them on horseback . I hope they will get them all. The are dressed in our uniforms from the best information we can get we are still gaining ground. We are (?). D.P. I want to see very bad but cannot at present and I hope that if we never meet on earth again that we may meet in heaven where parting will be no more. I must bring my letter to a close without I had more space no doubt your patience will be warried before you get through. Write to me as soon as you can excuse my bad writing (?) nothing more only I remain your friend until Death. Yours truly

R.T. Rushing to D.P. Campbell

This letter has been typed just as it is written. I know there are many punctuation mistakes, but I wanted it to be shown as it was originally written. I have proofread very carefully to make sure of this. One thing I find interesting about this letter is that Rueben speaks of not shaving since he left home. There is a picture of him in his uniform and his beard is very long.

Rueben is buried at Old Rushing Cemetery in Crittenden Co., Crayne, Ky. He has a military marker which simply reads, "R.T. Rushing Co. "D" 20 Reg't Ky. Infantry. Several of his brothers, nieces and nephews as well as his first wife, Mary and thier two infant daughters are also buried there. This cemetery is very badly neglected and most of the stones are propped up against trees or laying flat on the ground, few are in their original places.

From Gaila Young's book, Ancestors and Descendants of Reuben Thomas Rushing. Gaila sent copies of the letter and a War time picture of Reuben Rushing. Some of his brothers served in the 48th Illinois Infantry under Anderson Avitts and the rest were with Reuben in the 20th Kentucky Infantry.

I’m curious how to update family information. I am the Granddaughter of James Lewis and Irma Jane Mains Rushing. They have both recently passed and I don’t want our family history to be lost with my Grandmother. Thank you for any information you can give me.

Thank you,

Sandy Toner
