Obit on Henry O. Rushing - Pike Co., AL

The following article appeared in The Troy Herald on Tuesday, 29 January
1918:

"Another sad death, made more sadder to the immediate relatives by the
death of his brother, Friday, was when the spirit of Henry Rushing left its
earthly tenement Monday, seeking repose in that Heavenly Home where there
is no more sorrow nor pain.

Henry Rushing, one of the county's most estimable citizens resided 9 miles
west of Troy in the Starkville community, and his presence will be greatly
missed. He is surived by his widow and eight children.

Mr. Rushing was a consistent member of the Primitive Baptist Church, holding
membership at Eden.

The remains were tenderly laid to rest in the cemetery at Good Hope."

d. 26 Aug 1963 in Montgomery, AL) married Joseph Johnston Rushing (b. 9
Oct 1868 in Pike Co., AL & d. 8 Mar 1953 in Montgomery, AL) on 8 Sep 1897
in Ansley, Pike Co., AL. They are both buried in Oakwook Cemetery, Troy AL.

Researched by their Great Grandson, Ronald Davis Bridges.

[NI6153] Belinda Houston and several others have placed This Abel as a son of Malachi Rushing. In the 1850 Federal Census, Tishomingo Co, MS, Abel Rushing and 15 year old wife Mary are living next door to Isaac and Rebecca A. Tennison family from N. Carolina.

[NI6189] Enoch Deason b. ca. 1720/21 son of Wiliam Deason and Mary \Standefer?\. On a 1737 tax list Enoch is in the home of his sister Mary's husband Abraham Enloes (also spelled Enloe, Enlow, Inloe). Four of Wiliam Deason and Mary's children are registered in St. John's Parish Records. His three eldest sons are proved by the Lord Baltimore Survey of the Gunpowder Manor in 1767. William Deason had leased "Deason's Adventure" of the Manor on 20 March 1720, for the lifetimes of sons Samuel, William Jr. and John. (See Slattery, "Gunpowder Manor Individual Plats" based on Lord Baltimore Survey of the Manor in 1767.) Connecting daughter Mary to William Deason is accomplished because she leases part of the Manor and there was no other Deason old enough to be her father in Baltimore County, MD.

[NI6192] This Reuben White is a descendant of Joseph White the first Sherriff of Anson County, North Carolina and Moses White who came from Ireland to Philadelphia in 1722. This ascendency is well documented elsewhere and not covered here. Descendants are DAR eligible by Joseph White.

Caution: There is another contemporary Reuben White in Early Decatur Co., TN; 4th District [1850], this other Reuben White married Sallie Saint and has a son named Reuben, and is from Bumpcomb County, North Carolina and NOT Anson Co., NC.

Census data for Reubin White, Perry Co., 1830: 022011-120012. At this time he was living three households away from Henry White.

[NI6198] "I was married to Anderson Avitts Jan 11, 1874. His health was very bad at that date. Was taken down about Aug 1876. Was not able to walk any after that date. Was under the care of Dr. S. M. Truitt and took medicine continuously. His symptoms as I remember them were as follows * constant thirst * could drink water continually. Ravenous appetite. Could eat more than two well men. Craved candy sugar and mollases (sic) * passed at least five gallons of urine per day -- urine contained so much sugar that it was sticky and could be smelled anywhere about the house. His breathe was very oppressive. He had pain in back and hips, his feet and legs were swollen the last week or two that he lived. He was reduced to a mere skeleton and his skin was dry. Dr. Truitt is dead but he told me frequently that my husband had diabetes or sugar of the liver. My husband died Nov 27, 1877."

Biography of William Cain Rushing - Pike Co., AL

William Cain Rushing, son of Mathew and Elizabeth (Thornhill) Rushing
was born about 1810 in South Carolina. After Mathew’s death, William Cain
migrated to Montgomery County with his mother prior to 1830, as did some of
his brothers and sisters. William Cain married Mary Rushing (thought to be
a fifth cousin) 20 February 1830. They were married by Justice of Peace,
Arthur Rushing, a brother to William Cain. Mary was born about 1811 in
North Carolina.

William Cain Rushing and William F. Lane purchased land in Township 14,
Range 18, Montgomery County in 1831 and sold this land in 1837. William and
Mary later moved to Pike County near what is now Troy. William Cain was
elected Justice of Peace and commissioned to serve 13 April 1847. He was
elected again in March 1850 and was commissioned to serve 15 March 1850.
According to the 1850 Pike County Census, William Cain’s mother, Elizabeth
(Thornhill) Rushing, age 80 was living with them. She apparently died
between 1850 and 1860 as she was not listed in their household on the 1860
Pike County Census. William Cain and Mary had twelve children with the
last one being born in 1855.

There are many land d transactions of William Cain and Mary Rushing in the
deed records in Pike County. In the 1870 Pike County Census their real
estate was valued at $7,000.00 and personal property at $500.00. Mary died
between 1870 and 1873; however, her place of burial is unknown.

William Cain married Mrs. Mary Ann French 5 June 1873. They were married
by J. H. Stephens, Justice of Peace in Pike County. Mary was born 14 May
1842 in Alabama. William Cain and Mary (French) Rushing had two daughters.

The following article appeared in The Troy Messenger, Thursday, 18 December
1879: "Mr. W. C. Rushing, whose serious illness was mentioned last week
died on the 19th. Another good and honored man has been gathered to his
fathers. He had passed his three-score-ten years." William Cain died 19
December 1879; however, his place of burial is unknown. It has been said
that William Cain and Mary were buried at their homeplace on the Blind Jack
Road. The family was asked later to move their graves in order for a road
to go through. Undoubtedly their graves were not marked when they were
moved.

The Executors of the Estate of William Cain Rushing were appointed on 3
January 1880. They were John Eager Howard Rushing, J. J. Rainer, J. P. Nall
and J. D. Murphree, and they posted a $4,000.00 bond. In the final
settlement of the estate, the following heirs were named: Mack Rushing, J.
E. H. Rushing, Elizabeth Rushing Pugh, Mary Jane Rushing Moody, Joseph T.
Rushing, Solomon Rushing, Stephen McDonald Rushing, Lucinda Rushing Hinson,
Lizzie Rushing and Minnie Rushing.

Three children were not listed: Thomas A. Rushing died during the Civil
War; Susannah Rushing died between 1850 and 1860; and Pleasant F. Rushing
had undoubtedly died prior to that time.

On 4 February 1882, Mastin A. Hinson, was appointed guardian of Lizzie and
Minnie, the two minor children of William Cain and Mary (French) Rushing.
Lizzie and Minnie were living in Pike County with their mother.

Many receipts for their care and education were found in the Probate Records,
as well as petitions and documents for settling the Estate of William Cain
Rushing. Copies of some of these papers will follow, along with a copy of
Warrant to Appraisers. Since it was very hard to read, a list of the
Appraisement Bill reads:

"The State of Alabama, Pike County Probate Court. Estate of William Cain
Rushing, deceased. To the Honorable U. L. Jones, Judge of Probate Court,
Pike County: An Appraisement Bill of the Personal Estate of William Cain
Rushing deceased, make in accordance with the annexed warrant.
